1 PROHEALTHPROJECT

Over 180 attendees, including 140 poultry and 40 swine stakeholders participated in the first PROHEALTH event ‘Pig and Poultry Diseases: Biosecurity and Health’. It took place on the 4th September in Poland, following the European Association for Animal Production 2015 Annual Meeting and was hosted by the Warsaw University of Life Sciences, one of the project partners.

Professor Szeleszczuk, an internationally renowned expert in avian diseases from Warsaw University, put together an exciting programme consisting of a full-day of talks on poultry topics, with a parallel session in the afternoon dedicated to topics on pig production. Speakers from the PROHEALTH project included Prof. Ilias Kyriazakis (Project Coordinator; Newcastle University), Prof. Jarkko Niemi (Natural Resources Institute Finland), Prof. Dominiek Maes (Gent University), Tommy Van Limbergen (Gent University), Associate Prof. Jens-Peter Christensen (Copenhagen University), and Carlos Piñeiro (PigCHAMP Pro Europa S.L.), as well as many local speakers from Warsaw University and industry.

The events succeeded in attracting local key stakeholders from both academic and non-academic backgrounds, with a predominantly Polish speaking audience who followed the topics focusing on biosecurity and production diseases with great interest. In a post-event survey, 100% of the participants rated the event positively (90% “excellent” or “very good”) and stated they would recommend the event to a friend. This highly successful first event was a great opportunity for communicating PROHEALTH findings from the first year of the project, and will help build awareness of the project. Professor Tomasz Stadejek who participated at the meeting stated ‘all participants were very interested to hear of the recent trends in pig and poultry diseases research, and we will be watching the development of PROHEALTH with keen interest. We hope to convince the consortium to hold another event in Poland’.

We would like to thank Professor Szeleszczuk and his team at Warsaw University for their hard work planning and organising this excellent event. We look forward to next year where PROHEALTH will have dedicated sessions at International Conference for Production Diseases in Wageningen on the 20th-23rd June 2016, and at EAAP 2016 in Belfast on the 29th August- 2nd September. We hope to see you there!
